Improvements in and relating to welding or brazing processes
Abstract
Abstract 534,046. Welding; uniting by fusion; brazing. PERCIVAL, S. (Air Reduction Co., Inc.). Dec. 8, 1939, No. 31810. [Class 83 (iv)] Thick metal parts, such as plates, pipe ends, longitudinal seams of pipes &c. are butt seam welded or brazed by flame heating the edges of the seam and a solid filler strip progressively and then progressively inserting and pressing the strip into the seam so as to complete the joint. The surfaces of one or both parts may be superficially fused and the filling strip may be softened so as to be easily deformed by distributing the flames lengthwise so as to effect slow heating, whereas the sides of the parts are heated quickly and are not softened. The strip may be of the shape of the groove or may be made to conform to this shape during welding. Pipes to be welded together may be first tack-welded and then rotated by rolls 24, 25 under a torch 31 provided with jets for quickly heating the sides 14, 15 of the parts 11, 12 and with jets extended lengthwise for heating the faces 21, 22 of a triangular strip 19 which may be fed from a reel 27. Welding is completed by a roller 33 and by side rolls 34 which merge the lateral portions of the top of the weld with the outer surfaces of the parts. The filling strip may be coated with brazing material and flux to effect a brazed joint. The work may be stationary and the strip and torch moved relatively thereto.
