Abstract

Abstract 513,848. Dividing by fusion. HANCOCK, L. J. March 21, 1938, Nos. 8637 and 31441. [Class 83 (iv] A flame-cutting machine comprising a burner and a driven tracer wheel movable in any direction parallel to the planes of a work holder and a drawing &c. provided with an indicating means co-ordinated with respect to the burner and arranged to indicate with respect to lines on the drawing the direction in which the wheel moves the burner has an indicating means in the form of a cruciform light image or shadow thrown in the drawing by an optical projector or in the form of a real cross located adjacent the drawing, one line of the cross being parallel to the plane of the tracer wheel, the indicator being rotatably mounted and geared to turn on an axis at right angles to the drawing simultaneously with the tracer wheel. The line parallel to the flame of the tracer wheel may have an arrow head and the cross line is provided so that, particularly when turning sharp corners, the exact moment of turning is indicated when the point of intersection of the lines coincides with the corner. The burner 12, light projector 13 and motor driven tracer 19 may be carried by a structure 11 on a wheeled carriage 8 movable transversely on rails 5 on a wheeled carriage 4 movable longitudinally on rails 2 above the work 3. Projecting arms 1a on the frame 1 support a table 18, which is adjustable horizontally in two directions and also vertically and carries the drawing on its wider side. The projector 13 which is in alignment with the burner is provided with an electric lamp arranged in a reflector 37 and is provided with a tube connected by a 1 to 1 chain gear 22 to the tracer spindle which is connected by bevel gear 21 to the steering wheel 20. An inclined mirror 16 .is arranged to throw the image of the cruci- 'form mark into a vertical plane so that it is visible from the front of the machine. The projector tube has a slide 34, Fig. 2, provided with the mark and an adjustable case 35 containing the projecting lenses. The steering of the tracer wheel may alternatively be effected through the projectors. In the form shown in Fig. 2, the projector forms an attachment to existing machines being secured by an arm 23 to the casing 24 of the motor driving the tracer. To the other end of the'arm 23 is fixed a sleeve 25 in which the projector tube 27 is rotatable on ball bearings 26. The lamp 29 to reflector 30 are secured by an arm 28 to the sleeve 25. Steering is effected by the tracer handle 33, the tracer spindle being connected by chain gear 31, 32 to the projector tube. When a real cross is used it is carried at the end of a rod attached to a tubular member taking the place of the projector. In the event of a mirror being used the rod may pass through the mirror. According to the Provisional Specification the projector tube may be coupled to the tracer spindle' by two pairs of bevel wheels.
