Abstract

Abstract 505,008. Counting passenger traffic over stairways-of vehicles. COLT, G. H. April 21, 1938, No. 11955/37. [Classes 106 (i) and 106 (iii)] Passenger-carrying vehicles are provided with mechanism counting and indicating interiorly and exteriorly of the vehicle the number of passengers carried on the upper deck or decks of the vehicle. A passenger in ascending depresses the hinged step T<3> , rod R<2> and bellcrank L<3>, to move the rods R<4> and R<5> and lever L<1> to the left and put the clutch E, slidable along but rotatable with the shaft B3, into engagement with the bevel pinion W<2> engaging with the bevel wheel W<1>. On depression of the next upper hinged step T<4>, the rod R<1> and lever L<2>, the pawl P rotates the ratchet wheel F and shaft B<3> and thus the bevel pinion W<2> and bevel wheel W<1> to rotate through chain wheels W<5> and W<4> and chain Z the numbered dial D showing through an aperture A the number of vacant seats on the upper deck. Return of the lever L<1> and clutch E by springs S<4> is prevented by the foot M on the rod R<3> depressed with the lever L<2> engaging the lug N on the rod R<5>. To prevent premature return of the lover L<1> and rod R<5> under the action of the spring S<4> in the case of the rapid ascent of a passenger the rod R<5> is controlled by a dash-pot P<1>. A passenger in descending depresses the step T<4> to actuate the pawl P and dial D through the bevel pinion W<3>. On descending to the next lower step T<3> movement of the rod R<5> and clutch E is prevented by engagement of the foot M and lug N. To prevent premature rise of the rod R<3> and foot M under the action of the spring S<5> in the case of the rapid descent of a passenger the rod R<3 >is controlled by a dash-pot P<2>. The steps T<4> and T<8> carry rubbing strips V<1> and V<2> engaging with adjustable caps G<1> and G<2> on the rods R<1> and R<2> which also carry stop collars C<1> and C<2>. The dial D is successively positioned by a spring controlled roller R engaging in recesses in the member C secured to the dial D. The dial D can be re-set by insertion of a key into the hole H and may be numbered on the faces and/or the periphery and the such plural numberings may be staggered with respect to each other. Other dials actuated from the dial D by mechanical or electrical means may be arranged at different parts of the vehicle and each dial may be illuminated. The dial D can be replaced by a band or tape Z<1>, Fig. 3, secured to the chain Z and showing numbers through an aperture A<1>. In the modification shown in Fig. 2 the levers L<1> and L<2> are actuated through steel rods R<6> and R<7> attracted by solenoids U<1> and U<2> energized by switches F<1> and F<2> actuated on depression of the steps T4 and T<3> respectively. Specifications 15,596/88, 25,805/08, [both in Class 106], and 17,698/15, [Class 106 (iii)], are referred to.
