Improvements in sheets, windows, lenses and other optical devices and other objects formed of so-called "plastic glass" material
Abstract
Abstract 502,978. Coating articles with glass; glazing; fusing silica. WILLIAMS, W. E., and COMBINED OPTICAL INDUSTRIES; Ltd. Oct. 1, 1937, No. 26662. [Class 56] An object made of a transparent organic plastic material, such as that known under 'the Registered Trade Mark "Perspex," is given a protective coating of glass, silica, or vitreous glaze by vaporizing the coating-material in a high vacuum on to the surface of the article while shielding the latter from the heat of the vaporizing device. The articles coated may be sheets, lenses, or other optical devices which may be formed by the process described in Specification 416,398, [Group XX]. The lenses &c. 11, are supported in a receptacle 1, adapted to be highly evacuated, above electrically heated crucibles or tungsten strips 5 which receive the glass. A baffle plate 8, supported above the crucibles, is formed with perforations 9 corresponding in number with the crucibles, and so aligned with them that the vaporized glass passes through the baffle in the form of relatively narrow divergent beams.
