Abstract
Abstract 501,592. Thermal switches; thermometers. CHILOWSKY, C. Aug. 27, 1937, No. 23508. Convention date, Sept. 3, 1936. [Class 38 (v)] [Also in Groups XIII and XX] A heat-sensitive relay comprises a vessel in which an electric circuit is made or broken by the variations of volume or pressure due to the .absorption in or release from active carbon of a gas or vapour, upon variation of temperature resulting more especially from electrical or optical effects. In Fig. 1 active carbon, and a gas such as CO<2> or an inert gas, the absorption of which by the carbon depends upon the temperature, are enclosed in two small containers 5 and 6 of thin glass or metal which are connected by necks 7 and 8 to the limbs of a U-tube 1 containing mercury 2. When container 5 is heated by a coil 9 gas given off from the carbon raises the pressure to depress the mercury in the left limb and complete electrical connection between electrodes 3 and 4. Porous plugs 10 and 11 prevent ingress of mercury into containers 5 and 6 while the material in container 6 compensates for changes in the surrounding temperature. In Fig. 8, the invention is applied to a switch having two bellows 34 and 35 carrying between them a moving contact 36 to engage the fixed contact 37, when there is sufficient difference of temperature between containers 5 and 6. Fig. 15 shows three switches each comprising mercury in a tube, having contacts connected in parallel across a lamp 60, and each having a pair of sensitive elements 46 with blackened silver sheets fused thereon. Radiant energy which may be from the headlights of a vehicle is focused through a lens 64 and one of the smaller lenses 63 on a sensitive element. The invention is also applied to two way switches, and switches having one or more of the following features; the second container 6 heated to give a controlled biassing effect; conical terminations to the limbs of the U-tube to ensure operation of the switch only upon large changes in temperature; contact made and broken in a gas other than the gas absorbed by the carbon; variation of pressure transmitted through a flexible diaphragm; the containers externally blackened to increase absorption of radiation; heating of the carbon pure or mixed with nonconductive powders by direct passage therethrough of current. A tilting mercury switch is also described as operated by the movement of mercury in a separate tube carried by the switch, and various dispositions of mirrors and lenses are shown to allow a switch or a number of switches to be operated by radiant energy such as daylight, or light from a film projector, or from signal lamps. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also the utilization of the absorption and release of a gas or vapour from active carbon in a vessel in a temperature indicating device. Fig. 19 (Cancelled) shows an arrangement in which a gas released from active carbon in a bulb 5 moves a column of mercury 2 in a U-tube 1 and the temperature is indicated by a scale 75. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
