Abstract

Abstract 500,298. Plastic masses. JOHNSON, G. W. (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.) Aug. 9, 1937, Nos. 21879/37, 15614/38, and 18439/38. [Classes 2 (ii) and 2 (iii)] Pastes obtained by blending finely divided polyvinyl compounds with a substantially non- volatile plasticizing agent in which they are scarcely soluble at ordinary temperature are gelatinized by heating in the absence of pressure. The blending of the polyvinyl compound and the plastizer is effected in the absence of heat or pressure. The gelatinization may be effected in a mould or in a thin layer on a support. The viscosity of the pastes may be reduced by mechanical treatment in colour mills, roller mills or homogenizing machines or by the addition'of volatile diluents. Porous products may be obtained by introducing air or other gas or gas producing substance during the blending. The pastes may be used in the manufacture of packing rings, packing plates printing rollers, porous packing materials, heat and sound insulation, coating metal surfaces, coating and impregnating paper, leather, textiles, and building materials and for coating wires and cables, the pastes being subsequently gelatinized. In examples, pastes, to be subsequently gelatinized are prepared from polyvinyl chloride and tricresyl phosphate with or without the addition of chalk, talc, dodecyl phthalate, the benzoate of ethylene glycol monoxylenyl ether, slate meal, or silicious chalk, polyvinyl chloride, triphenyl phosphate and diethylene glycol dibenzoate, polyvinyl chloride and diethylene glycol dibenzoate, polyvinyl chloride and the neutral phthalic acid ester of diethylene glycol monomethyl ether, and an interpolymer of vinyl chloride and ethyl acrylate and tricresyl phosphate, dodecyl phthalate and medianyl benzoate. The second Provisional Specification also refers to the gelatinization of similar pastes prepared from other organic thermoplastic compounds such as acetyl cellulose, benzylcellulose, ethylcellulose and chlororubber. An example illustrates the production and gelatinization of a paste prepared from benzylcellulose, tricresyl phosphate, dibutyl phthalate and benzylnaphthalene.
