Improvements in or relating to direction finding radio receiving systems
Abstract
Abstract 496,217. Directive wireless signalling. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., and APPLETON, W. A. May 25, 1937, No. 14528. [Class 40 (v)] Relates to means for applying automatic volume control to a direction-finding set so that the signal strength fed to the indicator is made independent of the prevailing fieldstrength, though the ordinary directional response to differences of orientation is maintained. According to the invention the pickup from a frame aerial 1 is fed to two valves 2, 3, and gives directional effects in a pair of headphones or other suitable indicator. Simultaneously the pick-up from a non-directional aerial 4 is amplified by a control valve 5 feeding a rectitier 9, which, in series with a resistance 10, is included in the common grid circuit of the valves 2, 3. This provides a control bias which in regions of high fieldstrength reduces the sensitivity of the valves 2, 3, and vice versa. The aerial 4 may be the usual vertical aerial used for " sense " determination, Fig. 2 (not shown).
