Manufacture of substitutes for wool from viscose
Abstract
Abstract Artificial threads resembling wool are prepared by precipitating viscose in an acid spinning bath containing sodium sulphate, with or without a sulphate of a divalent metal such as zinc or magnesium, and not less than 7 per cent of sulphuric acid, the freshly-precipitated threads, while still consisting in part of cellulose xanthate, being then decomposed to cellulose hydrate while free from tension in a decomposition bath heated to at least 80 DEG C. The freshly-precipitated threads may be decomposed in continuous form or they may be cut to staple length before decomposition. After leaving the acid precipitating bath and before entering the decomposition bath, the thread may pass through an intermediate rinsing bath, for example a bath of hot water, which may contain caustic alkali or organic base dissolved therein. As decomposition baths there may be used the liquids prescribed in Specification 450,257 at temperatures between 80 and 110 DEG C. In an example the decomposition bath consists of a saturated solution of sodium sulphate at 105 DEG C. The Provisional Specification is not limited in respect of the nature of the acid precipitating bath and in respect of the temperature of the hot decomposition bath. Specifications 320,161, [Class 2 (ii)], 342,027, 462,184, 467,500, 472,603, and 481,565 are referred to.
