Improvements relating to filters
Abstract
Abstract Liquids are filtered through a fabric, felt, fleece, sheet or other permeable layer of artificial fibres made from a chemically indifferent polymerizate or mixed polymerizate of an organic compound or compounds containing at least one vinyl group. Polystyrene, polyisobutylene, polyvinyl ethers, polyvinyl chloride and after-chlorinated polyvinyl chloride are mentioned as suitable materials. A reinforcement or a filling-material, such as heavy spar, kaolin or graphite, which is resistant to acid and alkali may be associated with the layer. Felts or fleeces of the fibres may be given a more or less rigid form by the action of pressure or heat. In one example, a card fleece consisting of threads of polyvinyl chloride is pressed at raised temperature into a compact sheet, which may be embossed by pressing matrices or rollers with the grain corresponding to that of ordinary filter p paper. In another example a sheet is obtained by a process similar to that of ordinary paper-making from fibres of mixed polymerizate of vinyl chloride and acrylic acid methyl ester, prepared as described in Specification 387,976, [Group IV].
