Abstract
Abstract 448,901. Totalizators. ERICSSON TELEPHONES, Ltd., 67, Kingsway, London, and LIMB, F., Ericsson Telephone Works, Beeston, Nottingham. Feb. 20, 1935, No. 5403. [Class 106 (i)] In an electric totalizator for double bets, of the kind in which a ticket issued in respect of the winner of the first event is exchanged for a new ticket on any selected competitor in the second event, means are provided whereby in the case of a dead heat in the first event separate totals of the bets or bet units staked on each competitor in the second event are made in respect of each of the joint winners of the first event. This system is described with reference to a ticket-issuing machine of the type described in Specification 390,193 adapted for double and forecast betting by the provision of two competitor selecting levers working in separate slotted guides preferably arranged side-by-side. In the case of a forecast bet on a combination of two different runners, the levers are moved into selected positions at the bottom of the guides and the bet is registered by the appropriate individual and totals counters, there being one counter for each possible combination. In the case of double-event bets, one lever is moved into an upper selected position depending on the selected competitor of the first event and the other lever is moved into an upper test position. A bet is registered and a double event ticket is issued printed with the number of the selected competitor, the race number and the numbers of the two races constituting the double. A winning ticket is then exchanged for a second ticket issued as the result of movement of the first lever into an upper test position and the second lever into an upper selected position corresponding to the selected competitor for the second event of the double. Double betting. When it is desired to issue a ticket for the first event of a double-event, lever SO1, Fig. 2, is moved into an upper position corresponding to the selected competitor and lever SO2 is moved into the upper test position, i.e. the extreme left-hand position. Contacts DL, DR are closed by the respective levers and relay BC is operated. Relay BC operates relay PB, but relays T, TI in'the same circuit do not pull up owing to the resistance of relay PB. Relay PB operate the first relay SA of a relay chain SA ... SN which is common to a plurality of ticket issuing machines and may be of the two-co-ordinate type described in Specification 371,101. Relay SA pulls up and extends the conductor 26 via contacts sa1, chain contacts corresponding to contacts pb1 in relay equipments associated with unoperated ticket-issuing machines to the relay A individual to the machine operated and common conductor 33. Relay A releases SA unless its circuit is completed by another ticket-issuing machine in the same chain branch, but so long as earth is maintained on common conductor 33 a relay corresponding to A associated with another machine is prevented from operation. Relay A operates relay PD, Fig. 6, which operates relays AD, MP over circuits including the contact levers SD1, SD2, the relay AD being located in the " first-access '' equipment, Fig. 7, associated with the selected competitor. Prior to the commencement of betting a plurality of relays such as IS, Fig. 10, are operated corresponding to all the runners in the event and consequently upon operation of relay AD, MP a bet signalling circuit is closed via conductor 2a, 102, keys DHK, TDK, conductors 103, 104, 105 to relay IM in the counting apparatus of the selected competitor. Relay IM operates magnet IDM and also magnets ZDM, TDM of an individual summating counter, Fig. 12, and the totals counter, Fig. 13. Relay IM also pulls up TI which short-circuits PB and thereby allows relay T to operate. Relay T operates clutch and locking magnets CL, LC and starts up the motor M which causes a ticket for the first event to be printed and issued. Release of relay PB causes de-energization of the magnets IDM, ZDM, TDM and the counters are advanced one step to register the bet. Certain of these counters control indicators in known manner. Transfers to counters of higher denominations are made by the relays IZ, ZZ, TZ and the associated connections shown dotted. The arrangements of the circuits of the counters also ensure that if the interrupter contacts associated with the stepping magnets are not operated, the operating relays IM, IZ, ZM will, by maintaining earth potential on conductor 33, prevent another bet being accepted. When betting on the first event of the double event is to cease, the runner-relays IS are released and self-drive circuits are closed for the counters, Figs. 11 and 12, and these return to normal. When betting on the second event starts, the appropriate runner relays IS are operated and in addition the " totals " disconnect key TDK is operated to prevent the registration of bets in the totals counter. In this case, lever SD1 is moved to its upper test position and the lever SD2 is moved into an upper selected position corresponding to a selected competitor in the second event. The circuit operations resulting in the operations of relays BC, PB, SA, A and PD are similar to those described for a bet on the first event, but as lever SO1 is in the test position relay NP pulls up instead of MP and second-access relay JD associated with the selected competitor number is operated over SD2. The bet signal circuit to the counters, Figs. 11 and 12, is similar to that already described except that it is diverted at the contacts of key TDK to relay IM via conductor 111 and since the key TDK is operated operation of the totals counter, Fig. 13, is prevented. Double betting ; dead heat in first event. In the event of a dead heat in the first event, plugs U. V, Fig. 9, are inserted in the jacks J1 ... , J5 corresponding to the winners and keys DHK, TDK are operated prior to the commencement of betting on the second event. Operation of DHK pulls up relay DH which extends earth via conductor 128 to prepare circuits in auxiliary counters (not shown). These counters are similar to those shown in Figs. 11 and 12 and are connected to them by conductors 113, 114. Selecting lever SO1 is moved into a position corresponding to the winner of the first event as shown by the ticket presented for exchange and the lever S02 is positioned according to the competitor selected for the second event. Circuits are now completed as previously described, resulting in the operation of relay AD in the first access equipment and relay JD in the second access equipment, but relays NP, MP remain inoperative. The bet signal circuit is then extended to the counters, Figs. 11 and 12, via the plug V, but the totals counter remains inoperative owing to the operation of key TDK. If a ticket corresponding to the second winner is presented, the arm SD1 is positioned accordingly and the bet signal is diverted over plug U to the auxiliary counter, the counter, Fig. 12, also being operated so as to compute the total number of bets staked on each competitor in the second event. Double event ; test ticket. To issue a test ticket the levers SD1, SD2 are positioned in the upper test positions and both relays NP, MP pull up to operate relay TI which starts the issuing operation, the access relays and the counters, however, remaining inoperative. Forecast bets. When a forecast bet is made, the levers SD1, SD2 are both positioned according to the forecast and moved downwardly to close contacts FL, FR which pulls up relay WB and thereby operates a relay similar to SA in the " forecast " chain circuit and operates relay A which initiates operations similar to those already described except that circuits are closed over the levers SD1, SD2 in their selecting positions for relays EF, JF in the access equipments. These relays close a circuit to a counter individual to the selected forecast combination and also effect operation of a " totals " counter for forecast bets. Relay TI also is operated to initiate the issuing of a ticket. The outlets from the second access equipment corresponding to the combinations 1/1, 2/2 ... which cannot be employed in forecast betting are connected via contacts such as jf4 to a " non-runner " common lead 43. Non-runner facilities. If during doubles betting the ticket operating machine is operated to select a non-runner, the bet signal is diverted at the contacts of the individual runner relay to operate relay HO over common, lead 50. Relay HO effects the release of operated relays and the illumination of a lamp L2 which is normally short-circuited. Similar operations occur if the selecting levers are incorrectly operated for the two events, and also if there is incorrect operation during forecast betting except that the bet signal is diverted over the common lead 43 to effect operation of relay HO. Supervisory arrangements. Lamps L1, L3, L4 are provided in order to supervise the condition of the chain circuits and further lamps controlled by the chain relays SA ... SN facilitate the location of a fault. Specification 403,177 also is referred to.
