A new or improved process of producing surgical and sanitary pads, dressings and bandages
Abstract
Abstract Surgical and sanitary pads, dressings and bandages composed of fibrous material are given a waterproof but air-permeable coating by placing one or both sides in a solution of a polymer of vinyl alcohol, acrylic acid, or an ester thereof, containing a softener, poured upon a hard surface, and subsequently allowing the solvent to evaporate. A suitable solution comprises 1 part of polymerized ethyl acrylate dissolved in 4 parts of a mixture of acetone and methylene chloride, about 5 per cent of dibutyl phthalate being added as softener. A suitable surface is a plate of frosted glass. An opening may be made in the coating to expose the fibrous material to the part to be treated.
