An improved process for the production of welding rods or welding wires
Abstract
Abstract 423,547. Uniting by fusion. GREIS, T., 149, Nordstrasse, Krefeld, Germany. March 21, 1934, No. 8863. [Class 83 (iv)] [See also Group V] Arc-welding electrodes are produced by coating the metal wire or rod with a dry flux mixture consisting of asbestos mixed with pulverulent or finely-granulated metallic or non-metallic material necessary for welding, and applying this dry mixture directly to the rod or wire under very high pressure. Fig. 1 shows apparatus in which material is delivered through the die 9 by the simultaneous advance of screw-operated plungers 4, thus forming a coating 2 on the rod 1 which is fed by the rollers 8. The speed of the rollers is related to that of the material. The support 7 and die 9 are interchangeable for dealing with wires of various diameters. In modifications, more feeding pistons than two may be used or a single piston only. Fig. 3 shows coating- apparatus for an automatic welding-machine, in which wire 1 from a reel is passed continuously through the coating-apparatus and then fed as a coated wire 2 directly to the welding-point 11.
