Abstract

Abstract 409,585. Agricultural drainage; drain-making apparatus. WARMING, K., 48 Vestre Boulevard, Copenhagen. Oct. 10, 1933, No. 27914. [Classes 6 (i) and 33.] In making water-conveying conduits consisting of a vertical slot made in the ground by a drain plough and partly or wholly filled with granular material fed from the plough, a protective layer of sand, or a band of metal, fabric, impregnated paper, or other compact and durable material is deposited upon the granular material to prevent choking of the conduit by the entering of earth particles between the particles of granular material. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1 means for depositing a protective band is mounted on a drain plough of the kind described in Specification 404,206 and having a hollow pivoted coulter d. A strip g4 of water and acid proof paper is wound on a roller on a spindle removably supported between angle irons g and leaf springs g'. The strip is protected by a screen k and passes through tubes k<1>, k<2> and round a guide roller, surface, or plate k<3>. It is secured at the end so as to be drawn out by the onward movement of the implement. The flat tube k<2> may be detachably secured to the tube or coulter d through which the granular material passes from the supply hopper h. The guiding means may be adjustable or spring-pressed to urge the strip against the granular material. The paper strip may be stiffened by wires or by spun threads of jute, cotton, &c. It may also be perforated or bordered with teeth or cogs. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 6, the hollow coulter l and supply hopper u for the granular material are rigidly but detachably fixed on the runners a and a sand hopper x and pipe x<1> are rigidly or displaceably connected to them. The outlet of the coulter l is regulated by a shutter l<2> movable by means of a toothed rack l<4>, pinion l<5>, and hand-wheel l<6>. The sandfeeding appliance may be mounted some distance rearwardly of the hollow coulter.
