Improvements in or relating to processes of packing shelled nuts and cans and like containers packed with such nuts
Abstract
Abstract Shelled cashew, pistachio, &c. nuts are packed in a flexible-walled can &c., the process comprising filling the can with nuts, exhausting the air and replacing it by an inert gas, such as carbon dioxide &c., which is soluble in the oil of the nuts, and sealing the container to cause a partial vacuum by the absorption of the gas by the oil, the walls of the container being thereby drawn inwardly against the nuts to prevent them from shifting. The shelled nuts are preferably pretreated by being dried and skinned, and treated by steam &c. to impart a moisture content of approximately 5 per cent, which is stated to be the content for most efficient packing.
