Abstract

Abstract 363,510. Non-slipping devices for ladders. CRABTREE, J., 28, Spring Street, Great Harwood, near Blackburn. Dec. 23, 1930, No. 38657. [Class 20 (ii).] Relates to extensible foot attachments for ladders, of the kind comprising a bracket in which slides a bar, a pawl pivoted to the bracket being adapted to engage ratchet teeth on the bar to hold the latter in any required position of adjustment. According to the invention, the bracket is detachably mounted on the ladder side and consists of a housing connected by bolts to a lock-plate so as to clamp on to the ladder side at the foot thereof. In one construction, the attachment comprises a bracket 5, Figs. 1 and 2, which is secured to the ladder side L bv pivoted bolts 14 and a back-plate 16. The housing is slotted at the top and bottom to receive a slidable leg 6 provided with ratchet teeth 8 and a detachable pointed foot 7. Pivoted to the housing is a spring-actuated pawl 9 which is adapted to engage with the teeth 8 to hold the leg 6 in any required position of adjustment. The pawl has a lateral extension 11 whereby it may be actuated by the hand or foot. An arm 12 of an auxiliary pivoted lever, connected to the pawl by a link 13, may also be moved to actuate the pawl. An enlarged head 18 prevents the complete disengagement of the leg 6 from the housing. In a modification, the leg is constituted by a U - shaped member which is provided at the bend with teeth which grip the ground. The vertical arms of the leg are square in cross section and work in slots in a housing detachably secured to the ladder side. One arm has ratchet teeth with which engages a pawl pivoted to the housing.
