Improvements in or relating to light valves
Abstract
Abstract 342,219. Electro-optical light valves. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., Marconi House, Strand, London -(Assignees of Douden, W. L. ; 1581, Mansfield Place, Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A.) April 25, 1930, No. 12848. Convention date, May 23, 1929. [Classes 40 (iii) and 40 (v).] In a light valve, changing potentials are applied to opposite faces 2, 3 of an electrostatically responsive crystal 1, and changing interference effects between reflected and transmitted light are set up by the dimensional changes in the crystal. The reflection is obtained at half-silvered parallel plane surfaces 2, 3, which are also used as the electrodes. The potentials may be applied to the half-silvered surfaces through a ring electrode (Fig. 3, not shown). A grid-like screen 12 obscures the interference bands produced by a predetermined potential. According to modifications : the light is passed through the crystal parallel to the plane of the electrodes (Fig. 5, not shown); an interferometer of the Michelson (Fig. 8, not shown) or of the Lummer and Gehrke type is used (Fig. 9, not shown).
