Abstract

Abstract 337,775. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., and Johnston, A. J. April 30, 1929. Totalizators.-In a totalizator system, applicable to electric integrating meters, multidenominational bet impulses are transmitted to counter switches over rotary commutators, the transfer impulse from any counter passing to the counter for the next higher denomination by way of the rotary commutator related to the latter denomination. The contacts of the transmitters (rotary commutators) A, B, C and D corresponding to 2/-, ú1, ú10 and ú100 bets are in circuit with contacts 9, 38 ... which are closed when a ticket is issued at a corresponding machine. The arms of these commutators are continuously rotated and when the arm 7 (say) of the 2/- transmitter passes over bank contacts 6 marked by a closed contact 9 the notch relay 11 is actuated to step the 2/- counter E comprising the rotary switch banks E1, E2, E3, E4; and so on for the other denominations. Transfer mechanism. On the ninth step of the relay 11 a relay 41 is energized over bank E1 to open normally closed contacts 43, 45. When the tenth 2/- bet is collected, relay 41 releases, and the magnet 42 being "slow" a momentary circuit is made over contacts 45, 44 to operate relay 46 which locks, up over contacts 49, 48, the contact 50 marking, over lead 13, the contacts 34 of the transmitter B. When the arm 35 reaches a contact 34 the notch relay 15 is energized and actuates its associate counter F comprising banks F1 F2, F3, F4 to register a ú1 bet. At the same time the arm 36 of the bank B2 passes over a contact 37 whereon an impulse is sent through the relay 47 which breaks contact 48, resetting the relays 41, 42, 46, 47 for the next transfer. Transfer between ú1 and ú10 denominations is identical, but for transfer to the ú100 counter a relay 25 is energized on the tenth step of counter G1, G2, G3, and locks up over its contact 28. The transfer. impulse is sent to transmitter D1 over contact 27, the release of relay 25 being effected by relay 31 on its intermittent energization through the commutator D2. The various counters G, H, I, for ú10, ú100, ... are duplicated by means of counters K, L, M, N driven in synchronism with the former, their driving magnets OM, being operated over second contacts of the relays 21, 63. As no tickets of value above ú100 are issued transfer to the counters I, J, M, N is direct. Each counter has a resetting wiper, E3, E4; F3, F4; G2; K2; ... &c. being zeroized when contacts RR are closed by a reset re:lay. The ú10 and higher denominational counters have each banks G1, H1, ... &c. from which monogrammic lamp indicators may be actuated. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 329,631.
