Abstract
Abstract 325,861. Soc. des Usines Chimiques Rhone-Poulenc, Hereward, H. W., and Hereward, P. O., (Representatives of Ehrhardt, E. F.). Sept. 3, 1928. Addition to 321,697. Phenol-aldehyde condensation products.- In the production of synthetic resins by condensing polyhydric phenols with formaldehyde and recovering the water by distilling in vacuo or by precipitating the resin by dilution with water or a salt solution as described in the parent Specification, the polyhydric phenol is replaced by a mixture of a polyhydric and monohydric phenol. In the examples (1) phenol, resorcin, and aqueous formaldehyde are heated and the water is removed by distillation in vacuo ; (2) the product of example 1 is mixed with sawdust and moulded ; (3) phenol, resorcin, aqueous formaldehyde and sawdust are mixed and distilled in vacuo ; (4) phenol, resorcin, aqueous formaldehyde and ammonia are mixed and heated to 58-60‹ C. and the resin is precipitated by a saturated salt solution, the precipitate being filtered and then dried in vacuo, or (5) in a current of air at 35‹ C.
