Abstract
Abstract 312,970. Hamilton, R. M. March 2, 1928. Totalizators.-A totalizator is provided with means for continuously indicating the odds and for adjusting the mechanism when a ticket is stamped with the prevailing odds, in order to take account of the sum thus earmarked. Logarithmic conversion apparatus. Each advance of the pool drum 1 operates a lever 10 to exert a pull, through a spring 5, on a cord 6 passing over pulleys 80 - - 85. Each pulley is carried by an arm 90 - - 95 loose on a sleeve on a shaft 11 but connected to the sleeve by a free-wheel clutch. The arms pass through a slot 10 in a plate 19 but at one point there is a gap 101 one edge of which is a curve plotted vertically for log. differences and horizontally for log. values. At each operation of the cord therefore one of the pulleys descends to an extent corresponding with the log. increment and turns the related sleeve. The sleeves are interconnected in cascade by free-wheel clutches and 1 : 10 gearing, the last sleeve being fixed to the shaft 11, and thus the movement is transmitted to this shaft and so to one member 130 of a differential gear. The rotation of the shaft advances the cam plate 19 by means of a screw-thread 14 on the shaft engaging a nut 15 rotarily connected to a cylinder 16 having an internal screwed barrel 17 meshing with a nut 18 on the plate. In this way as the registration proceeds the shaft 11 is moved to a position corresponding with the log. of the value registered and the various pulleys come into action according to the powers of 10 reached. In a similar manner the horse bets registered at 2 are converted into logarithmic movements of the other member 131 of the differential gear through cord 23, plate 20, with slot 220, and shaft 25. Registering odds taken. When a ticket is stamped with the prevailing odds, a drum 3 is correspondingly advanced and this effects through cord 24 and cam slot 210, a rotation of a sleeve 26, slidably keyed to drum 28 which gears with drum 16 and consequently rotates this to shift the cam plate 19 backwardly one step, the cam plate 20 similarly being put back to the same extent by the action of screw thread 29 and nut 31. Indicating and recording the odds. The planet wheel frame of the differential gear carries a contact 140, Fig. 3., adapted to sweep over contact segments 141 wired to indicator lamps 170-174 for showing the different odds of the horse concerned, and to magnets 150-154 arranged in a stamping machine. The magnet in circuit throws a latch 180 into the path of an arm 191 to stop this when a handle 183 is turned, thus bringing a type into position beneath the handle. By depression of the latter the odds at the moment are recorded on a ticket and a circuit is completed to advance the drum 3 one step. Specification 307,816 is referred to.
