Abstract

Abstract 254,793. Keith, J. P., Cruwys, J., and Power Equipment Co., Ltd. April 7, 1925. Switches, mechanical, without quick action; contacts.-Multi-way switches comprise a number of contact-carrying springs 6 arranged in longitudinal grooves 5 within an insulating cylinder 1 the end 2 of which is clamped to a panel 3. A rotary operating spindle passes through the panel and the end of the spindle and is provided externally with an operating knob 25 and near its inner end with a contact operating member consisting of an insulating disc 17 bearing two diametrically opposed outwardly spring-pressed balls 19. The inner end of the spindle 21 is supported in the closure member 24 of the cylinder. As the spindle 21 is rotated each ball engages successively the springs 6 causing contacts at their free ends to engage fixed contacts 16 which are carried by semi-circular metal rings 12. 12 corresponding to the two poles of the circuit. The rings 11, 12 are connected to terminal screws 15 passing through the wall of the cylinder the similar terminal screws .7 7 being connected to the fixed ends of the contact springs 6. Projections 13 are provided within the cylinder to limit the rotation of the operating member and a pointer 26 and dial indicates the circuits controlled. The contacts may be of gold, silver &c. on phosphor bronze strips and the fixed contacts may be spring mounted to produce a wiping action during their engagement. The arrangement of contacts may be suitably modified in accordance with the circuits to be controlled.
