Abstract

Abstract The invention relates to a surgical appliance for introducing drainage tubing, scopes, instruments or other surgical apparatus into cavities such as the thoracic cavity. The appliance has a trochar which is divided into a plurality of separate components and an actuator connected to the trochar components, so that when it is operated, those components are moved radially from a closed position where they lie substantially parallel and closely adjacent to each other, to an open position where they are substantially parallel but separated radially. The radial separation of the components creates a central channel through the trochar components through which a drain tube can be passed. <IMAGE>

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 14
Claim 1
Independent Claim 86 words
A surgical appliance for the insertion of a tube through the skin comprising a trochar divided into a plurality of separate components, and an actuator to which the trochar components are connected, so that they can be moved, by operation of the actuator, radially with respect to each other from a closed position in which they lie substantially parallel and closely adjacent to each other, to an open position where they are substantially parallel but separated radially to create a central channel through the trochar components.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 86 words
A surgical appliance for the insertion of a tube through the skin comprising a trochar divided into a plurality of separate components, and an actuator to which the trochar components are connected, so that they can be moved, by operation of the actuator, radially with respect to each other from a closed position in which they lie substantially parallel and closely adjacent to each other, to an open position where they are substantially parallel but separated radially to create a central channel through the trochar components.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 17 words
A surgical appliance as claimed in Claim 1, in which the trochar has a sharp distal end.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 56 words
A surgical appliance as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, in which there is a central opening through the actuator which, when the trochar components are opened, is in continuation of the central channel through those components, whereby it is possible to pass a tube through the entire appliance when the trochar components are open.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 74 words
A surgical appliance as claimed in Claim 3, in which there is an annular tube seal adapted to seal between the appliance and a tube passed through it, and an annular front seal adapted to seal between the appliance and the skin of the patient when the appliance is being used, the two seals together providing at least a restriction on the access of air to the site where the trochar penetrates the skin.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 35 words
A surgical appliance as claimed in any one of Claims 1 to 4, in which the actuator is adapted to hold the trochar components in a parallel relationship with each other during the radial movement.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 61 words
A surgical appliance as claimed in any one of Claims 1 to 5, in which the actuator includes a member rotatable about the longitudinal axis of the trochar, this member having a spiral formation co-operating with at least one tooth on each of the trochar components so that rotation of the rotatable member produces parallel radial motion of the trochar components.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 34 words
A surgical appliance as claimed in Claim 6, in which the tooth or teeth on each trochar component is or are provided on a block extending radially from the proximal end of the component.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 60 words
A surgical appliance as claimed in Claim 7, in which each of the blocks is received in a radial slot in an actuator body, the rotatable member being journalled on the body and located axially thereon by a shoulder on the body and an oppositely facing shoulder on a handle extending from the rear of and attached to the body.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 43 words
A surgical appliance as claimed in Claim 8, in which each block has interengagement with at least one shoulder in the slot to prevent axial displacement of the block, and therefore the component on which the block is provided, relatively the actuator body.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 27 words
A surgical appliance as claimed in any one of Claims 1 to 9, in which the distal end of the trochar has one or more cutting edges.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 50 words
A surgical appliance as claimed in Claim 10 in which there are three trochar components arranged to move on radial paths spaced at 1200 around the trochar longitudinal axis, and one component terminates at the distal end, short of the other two components, leaving cutting edges on those two components.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 19 words
A surgical appliance constructed, arranged and adapted to operate substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 19 words
A surgical appliance constructed, arranged and adapted to operate substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
