Abstract

Abstract In deriving the impedance of a zone of a body errors arise when currents used stray from the zone due to movements of, and/or changes within the body. In the invention the current used for deriving the impedance is passed through a zone 16 using electrodes 5 and 8 outside the zone and the potential also required for deriving the impedance is sensed at two electrodes 12 and 13 at ends of the zone. The current is confined to the zone by passing control currents between control electrodes 4 and 7, and 6 and 9 to set up virtual current-barriers along the boundaries of the zone. Pairs of electrodes 11, 12; 12, 14, 11, 13 and 13, 15 straddling the boundaries are used to adjust currents passed by the control current electrodes to establish the positions of the boundaries and to stabilise these positions when movement and/or internal functional change occurs. Virtual barriers may be established between a plurality of impedance measuring zones by placing larger arrays of electrodes on the front and back of the body or around the body. <IMAGE>
