Abstract

Abstract A catheter 10 has a relatively flexible body 12 formed of a hydrophobic polymer (e.g. silicone rubber), the distal tip portion 14 of which is coated with a hydrophilic polymer to impart, in the dry state, rigidity to the tip portion. When the catheter is in the body the hydrophilic coating absorbs or adsorbs physiological fluid with resultant softening of the coating so as to render the tip portion relatively flexible. The hydrophilic polymer may be formed from N-vinyl pyrrolidone, an acrylate or a methacrylate. <IMAGE>

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim 49 words
A catheter comprising an elongated relatively flexible body portion formed of a hydrophobic polymer and including a tip portion for insertion into the body, said tip portion including means rendering the tip portion relatively rigid in a dry state and relatively flexible in use in contact with physiological fluid.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 49 words
A catheter comprising an elongated relatively flexible body portion formed of a hydrophobic polymer and including a tip portion for insertion into the body, said tip portion including means rendering the tip portion relatively rigid in a dry state and relatively flexible in use in contact with physiological fluid.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 22 words
The catheter of Claim 1 wherein said means comprises a hydrophilic polymer coating on said tip portion formed of a hydrophobic polymer.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 15 words
The catheter of Claim 2 wherein said hydrophilic polymer is generally insoluble in physiological fluid.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 11 words
The catheter of Claim 1 wherein the tip portion is arcuate.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 9 words
The catheter of Claim 1 comprising a Foley catheter.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 9 words
The catheter of Claim 1 comprising a venous catheter.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 27 words
The catheter of Claim 1 wherein said means comprises a hydrophilic polymeric coating formed from a monomer selected from the group comprising N-vinyl pyrrolidone, acrylate and methacrylate.
Claim 9
Independent Claim 68 words
A method of facilitating the placement and tissue non-irritating retention of a relatively flexible hydrophobic indwelling urinary or venous catheter comprising the steps of: providing a coating, which is relatively rigid when dry, on at least a tip portion of the catheter; inserting the tip portion-coated catheter into the body; and permitting the coating to become relatively flexible by uptake of the aqueous moiety of a physiological fluid.
Claim 10
Independent Claim 68 words
A method of facilitating the placement and tissue non-irritating retention of a relatively flexible hydrophobic indwelling urinary or venous catheter comprising the steps of: providing a coating, which is relatively rigid when dry, on at least a tip portion of the catheter; inserting the tip portion-coated catheter into the body; and permitting the coating to become relatively flexible by uptake of the aqueous moiety of a physiological fluid.
