Abstract

Abstract A piggyback I.V. administration set for alternatively administering to a patient a primary liquid and a secondary liquid at different pressures and flow rates, and for automatically switching between them, comprises primary tubing adapted at one end for connection to a primary liquid source, secondary tubing adapted at one end for connection to a secondary liquid source at a higher pressure head, a Y-site junction device for receiving the other ends of said tubings, outlet tubing from said junction device for conveying either liquid to the patient, check valve means in the primary liquid flow path to prevent flow of secondary liquid into the primary tubing, first adjustable flow rate control means below the junction device for controlling the higher flow rate of the secondary liquid, and second flow rate control means above the first for controlling the flow rate of the primary liquid without restricting the flow of secondary liquid. The check valve may be a hydrophilic microporous membrane. Other such membranes which may be located in the Y-junction, may be provided to protect the patient from entrained air. <IMAGE>

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 19
Claim 1
Independent Claim 153 words
A piggyback l.V. administration set for alternatively administering to a patient a primary liquid and a secondary liquid at different pressures and flow rates, and for automatically switching between them, said set comprising primary tubing adapted at one end for connection to a primary liquid source, secondary tubing adapted at one end for connection to a secondary liquid source at a higher pressure head, a Y-site junction device for receiving the other ends of said tubings, outlet tubing from said junction device for conveying either liquid to the patient, check valve means in the primary liquid flow path to prevent flow of secondary liquid into the primary tubing, first adjustable flow rate control means below the junction device for controlling the higher flow rate of the secondary liquid, and second flow rate control means above the first for controlling the flow rate of the primary liquid without restricting the flow of secondary liquid.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 153 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 35 words
An l.V. administration set according to claim 1 wherein said check valve means in the primary flow path is a hydrophilic microporous membrane having air downstream thereof to prevent reverse flow of secondary liquid therethrough.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 32 words
An I.V. administration set according to claim 2 comprising further hydrophilic microporous membrane means in the secondary flow path for preventing, when met with aqueous liquid, passage of air to the patient.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 24 words
An l.V. administration set according to claim 3 wherein said check valve means and said microporous membrane means are located in said junction device.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 39 words
An l.V. administration set according to claim 3 or claim 4 further comprising airvents upstream of said check valve means and upstream of said membrane means for venting air to the atmosphere, said air vents comprising hydrophobic microporous membranes.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 24 words
An I.V. administration set according to any preceding claim wherein said second flow rate control means is an adjustable clamp on the primary tubing.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 34 words
An I.V. administration set according to any preceding claim further comprising an additional hydrophilic membrane means in the flow path of each liquid to provide additional protection against passage of air to the patient.
Claim 9
Independent Claim 128 words
A device for use in a piggyback l.V. administration set to permit automatic switching between primary and secondary liquids to be intermittently administered at different rates, said device comprising a first receiving chamber with an inlet for primary liquid, a second receiving chamber with an inlet for secondary liquid, a delivery chamber having a common outlet for both liquids, and an intermediate chamber between said delivery chamber and said receiving chambers, said intermediate and first receiving chambers being separated by a hydrophilic microporous membrane which when wet passes primary liquid but not air at the maximum pressure within said device, said membrane being located in the upper portion of the device in position to retain air on the downstream side thereof to prevent back-flow of secondary liquid therethrough.
Claim 10
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 34 words
A device according to claim 8 including a further hydrophilic microporous membrane separating said intermediate chamber from at least one of said second receiving and delivery chambers, said membrane passing liquid but not air.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 22 words
A device according to claim 8 including further hydrophilic microporous membranes separating said intermediatechamberfrom both second receiving chamber and said delivery chamber.
Claim 13
