Abstract

Abstract 15,937. Petersson, G. H. Nov. 11, 1914, [Convention date]. Void. [Published under Section 91 of the Act.] Pitot-tube apparatus.-Relates to apparatus for indicating the speed of a ship and the distance travelled thereby, of the type described in Specification 11,265/12, [Class 69 (ii), Hydraulic presses &c.]. The device 101, Fig. 1, which is not described, transmits pressures from a Pitot tube arranged in the bottom of a ship, through the pipes 19, 20, to the chambers 1, 8 separated by the bellows 2. One end of the bellows is fixed to the plate 3, and the other to the movable disk 4. The apparatus is filled with liquid through an aperture in the cover, which is provided also with a window 9. The rod 1<a> actuates the lever 11 pivoted at 12, so that the toothed segment 13 rotates the pinion 14 and consequently the cam 15. The weight of the bellows and connected mechanism may be taken by the spring 21 or by a counterweight, and the cam 15 actuates a suitable device by which the speed of the vessel is indicated on a uniform scale. A pipe 24 with valve 25 may be provided to equalize the pressures on the two sides of the bellows before taking a reading. In the form shown in Fig. 2, the bellows 39 is inverted, and the rod 17 is pivoted to a lever 11, the fixed pivot 30 of which may be adjusted to vary the ratio of the arms of the lever. Two springs 31, 32 may be provided to balance the weight of the moving parts. An air-release pipe 43 is provided for the bellows. Both the above described apparatus are filled with liquid till it is visible in the window 9, and the higher Pitot pressure is then admitted to the other side of the bellows. Both apparatus can only be used at the highest point in the pipe system, and for other positions the apparatus shown in Fig. 3 is used. The highest liquid surface in the system is shown in the filling vessel 49, and liquid-tightness of the rod 17 is ensured by connecting it to the plate 47 which carries the bellows 57. The upward pressure on the plate 47 balances the weight of the moving parts. When a reading is to be taken, the valves 56, 59 are closed. An additional balancing-weight 60 also may be provided. Modifications are described in which the balancing-bellows 57 are placed in the side of a chamber superposed on the bellows chamber 1.
