Improvements relating to Electric Contact Makers.
Abstract
Abstract 2361. Clempson, L., and Murrell, A. E. Feb. 7. Switches.-A switch, designed for use in connexion with artillery for the purpose of firing a number of puffs or detonators consecutively, is adapted to be set in definite positions by hand and returned in steps by an electromagnetic or manual tripping device. The switch consists of a number of stationary contacts g ... g<19> traversed by a movable contact mounted on an arm f. A clock-spring, wound up by turning a milled head q on the arbor carrying the arm f during the setting thereof, returns the arm in steps under the control of an escapement oscillated electro-magnetically. The electro-magnet c is connected to a small dynamo in a circuit which is made and broken for each step. A spring push u provides for the oscillation of the escapement by hand. The respective contacts g ... g<19> are connected to the firing-circuits. To ascertain if the circuits are intact, a switch v is actuated by a push w to break the normal connexion to the arm f and replace it by a high-resistance connexion through the magnet y of a bell a<1> which sounds if the circuits are intact, the resistance preventing detonation. The instrument is enclosed in a box a on which the terminals of the various circuits are mounted.
