A Method and Apparatus for Purifying Liquids by Centrifugal Action.
Abstract
Abstract 22,406. Dahlhaus, A. Oct. 2. Machines for separating liquids from solids by density; drums. - Solids or impurities of greater specific gravity than the liquids containing them are centrifugally separated from the liquids in a rotary drum provided with chambers on its outer periphery which receive the solids and dry them, and from which the solids are continuously removed by suction or pressure. Sewage and waste waters from mining, smelting, and crushing works may be thus dealt with, and the apparatus may also be used for precipitating acids from waters after the introduction of precipitating substances, and in the paper and chemical industries for drying substances. The liquid passes through a pipe 1, Fig. 1, into a drum 2 on to spraying-disks 4. The sludge rises against a sloping wall 5, over which it passes, and descends into a chamber 7, from which it is expelled along passages 11 by suction, while the water passes out of the top of the drum into an annular channel 8, and is carried by pipes 9 into an annular container 10, from which it is discharged. In a modified form, hinged valves, which may be operated by hand or power, are provided to close the opening between the interior of the drum and the chamber 7, while the sludge is being withdrawn from the chamber by suction through pipes leading through the hollow shaft. In another form, communication between the interior of the drum and the chamber 7, Fig. 3, for the reception of the sludge is by means of a slot 18, which is open during the centrifugal separation, and is shut during removal of the sludge by a valve 21 operated by a piston 17 in a cylinder, to which compressed air is supplied through a pipe 16. As the valve 21 closes, slots 19 in the cylinder are opened and the compressed air passes to a nozzle 15, causing suction in a pipe 13, down which the sludge is thereby carried. In another form, a pressure medium introduced through a pipe 16, Fig. 4, forces the sludge from the chamber 7 through pipes 13 a single valve 21 being employed to close alternately the opening of the pipe 16 into the chamber 7 and the opening between the chamber 7 and the interior of the drum.
