Abstract
Abstract 819. Niblett, J. T. Jan. 10. No Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). Electrodes, mass, for lead accumulators. Loose active material is packed against pasted grids or the like b, c inside and outside a porous pot d before the paste has set, to obtain good contact. The outer grids may form the cell walls, and these may be connected by transverse pieces pasted on both sides, to reduce internal resistance. In Fig. 1 is shown a cruciform inner electrode b which has ribs or the like and may be perforated, and an outer electrode c fitting in a square cell. Perforated tubes h may be inserted to provide electrolyte-space, and a top layer of glass-wool, fibrous asbestos, or the like may be retained below a perforated false cover k. Separators; diaphragms. - According to the Provisional Specification, the porous pot may consist of solid pine, fir, or other wood, or of laminated material such as layers of wood veneer and perforated vulcanite or celluloid, or asbestos fabric, parchment, carton, or other yielding material. If laminated, it may be closed at the bottom by a plug or shoe. Gas exits.-The exit shown in Fig. 1 may, according to the Provisional Specification, be replaced by a short plug bearing a U-tube surrounded by a sleeve, forming with the cell a space sufficient to receive the electrolyte, or by a U-tube with limbs of unequal length, the longer opening to the air, and the shorter, or both, being surrounded by a sleeve.
