Multistage Re-action Steam Turbines.
Abstract
Abstract 4157. Brown, Boveri, et Cie, Akt.-Ges. March 26, 1907, [date applied for under Section 91 of Patents &c. Act, 1907]. Elastic-fluid turbines.-To prevent deformation by bending &c. of the cylinder or shaft of a multiple - stage reaction steam turbine of the Parsons type, due to the high temperature of the entering superheated steam, a separate annular chamber is provided within the casing to isolate the steam until it has sufficiently cooled. The annular chamber b is fixed and has a bladed portion d. A rotating bladed drum e is thermally insulated from the shaft, but is connected to it for driving purposes. Pieces i centre the portion e relatively to the shaft, and projections l centre the fixed part d. The flanged steam inlet m may be formed in one piece with the part d or may be attached to it. Steam-tight packing o is provided for the steam inlet. The superheated steam passes into the annular space b and between the portions d, e before coming into contact with either the turbine shaft or casing when it is at a sufficiently low temperature. The passage between the part d and the casing leads to the dummy piston h for balancing purposes.
