Improvements in and relating to Sound Signalling and the like.
Abstract
Abstract 23,166. Gardner, J. Oct. 19. Signals, audible and submerged ; signals, receiving- apparatus for ; sounds, controlling apparatus by.- In a method of submarine sound signalling or of controlling apparatus by means of sound waves, two or more notes of different pitch are simultaneously emitted at the sending-station, an3 are received at one or more receiving-stations by selective receivers, which respond to the notes emitted. In the arrangement of transmitting- apparatus shown in Fig. 1, three keys D, D<1>,D<2> are connected to make-and-break devices E, E<1>, E<2>, having different numbers of conducting and insulating segments, and connected in circuit with the primary of the transformer B, the secondary of which is in circuit with an electro-magnet adapted to vibrate the plates of the ship. The shaft H is rotated rapidly, so that on depressing two or more of the keys D, D<1>, D<3>, two or more sounds of different pitch are simultaneously emitted. In a modification, the magnet core may be wound with several coils, each in circuit with its own key and commutator device ; or separate electromagnets may be arranged in circuit with each key. The battery C and the commutators may be replaced by sources of-alternating current of different frequencies, which may act upon diaphragm sounders, such as shown in Fig. 3, in which the sound waves are reflected in all directions in an horizontal plane by the conical -reflector M. The reflector may be dispensed' with, and the sounder placed in a tank of water within the ship below the water line. The selective receiving- apparatus, which is fully described in Specification No. 7654, A.D. 1906, comprises a receiving- microphone 0, Fig. 4, in circuit with the primary of a transformer, the secondary of which is in circuit with a telephonic device P; the armature of the device P consists of a tuned strip Q carrying one electrode of a microphone R<1> included in the circuit of a signalling or controlling magnet. In the Provisional Specification, reference is made to the transmission of the sound waves through the air or other medium, and to a form of make-andbreak device, in which a revolving toothed wheel successively closes a spring contact in the circuit of the electro-magnetic sound-producing device. Specifications Nos. 7565 and 11,021, A.D. 1906, are also referred to in the description.
