Improvements in Self-closing Valves.
Abstract
Abstract 5917. Darling, W. R. March 21. Check valves; indiarubber, gutta-percha, and like valves.-Relates to self-closing valves for pneumatic-tyre tubes and football bladders, and for similar purposes, in which the valve is constructed wholly of rubber or other suitable material and in one part. Fig. 2 shows the valve, which is provided with any convenient flange or flange-and-groove device for the purpose of attachment. An orifice B is formed for the reception of the inflating-instrument. A smaller passage C is formed, and from the base of this passage to the bottom of the plug two or more diametral slits are made in the plug, thus forming abutting valve faces. If desired, a separate rubber ring may be applied in the known manner to the outside of the lower part of the plug to counteract any tendency of the segments to spread. Air is prevented from escaping from the valve by the lateral air pressure on the outside of the segments, which forces the abutting faces together.
