Improvements in Screwdrivers
Abstract
Abstract 13,985. Lane, H. W. June 20. Screwdrivers have spring lips which grip the undercut slot in the head of a screw and so hold it while being driven. A longitudinal slot 3 is cut in the edge of the blade, forming two spring lips 1, 2 which have slight beadings 4 on their outer edges as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Thin pieces of spring steel 5, 6 may be used instead, having a distance-piece 7 between, or each having an outward set, and entering a large groove in the screwdriver. Thin pieces of steel may also be used as shown in Fig. 5, but, in all cases, the strips are secured by soldering or riveting. Figs. 6 and 6<a> show a modification in which a continuous bent spring is nsed. Figs. 7 and 8 show another form in which the jaws have teeth 11 which enter into the groove 10 in the head 9 of a screw and so hold it. These jaws may be elastic so as to separate naturally, or they may be rigid and operated in the manner employed in the universal watch key.
