Abstract

Abstract 28,732. Murrie, J. Dec. 31. Centrifugal pumps.-Relates to centrifugal pumps and consists in a construction by which " foaming " is prevented and the pump thus rendered capable of forcing the liquid to a greater height. Fig. 1 shows a sectional elevation. The pump consists of a hollow cylinder E which is mounted on the hollow shaft D and driven from the pulley H. The shaft D also forms the suction pipe up which the water passes to the cylinder. The water is then driven by centrifugal force through a narrow slit E' into the annular channel G. If desired, the spaces formed between the cylinder and the end covers may serve as feeders and receivers, the shaft D then being formed solid. Packing-rings E' are fitted into grooves on either side of the slit or slits E<1> so as to form a water-tight joint. Radial propellers E<2> are fitted inside the pump barrel, and guiding-plates in the channel G. The width of the slits E<1> is made comparatively small, so that the cylinder is always full of water, with the result that a steady pressure is obtained and "foaming prevented. The Provisional Specification states that the pump is suitable for raising water, oil, or other liquids from mines, and for compressing, exhausting, or circulating aÙriform fluids.
