Improvements in or connected with Indexes of Meters for Gaseous Fluids.
Abstract
Abstract 1541. Thorp, T. Jan. 22. Meters.-In gas meters, particularly those constructed on the turbine or rotary principle, variable-speed mechanism is interposed between the shaft driving the registering-mechanism and the shaft operated by the measuring-wheel or mechanism. The object of this mechanism is to compensate for the varying pressure of the gas, and indicate the volume as it would be if the pressure of the gas were that of the atmosphere. One method of effecting this is shown in Fig. 1, where the spindle 3, driven by the measuring- mechanism, drives a friction disc 4 through bevelwheels on a worm and worm-wheel. The disc 4 is pressed against another disc 10 by a spring 20. The disc 10 is mounted on a sliding shaft 14, and its position is controlled by the position of the flexible boxes 11. The interior of these boxes is connected with the measuring-chamber, so that, if the pressure of the gas increases, they expand, forcing the disc 10 further from the centre of the disc 4, thus making it register faster, and compensating for the diminution in volume of the gas owing to the increased pressure. The registering- mechanism is driven from the disc 10, through the shaft 2, and pinions 1, 15. The mechanism may be varied in several ways ; the disc 4 may be fixed directly on the spindle 3, the disc 10 then moving on a horizontal axis; the pressure of the gas may act on the outside of the flexible boxes 11, their insides being in communication with the atmosphere.
