Abstract
Abstract 24,776. McCallum, C., and Campbell, J. M. Dec. 5. Jars etc.; stoppers.-Relates to jars, pots, drums, and like receptacles for containing food-stuffs &c., and is applicable also to cooking-utensils. The vessel A (shown as a metal drum) is formed with external and internal beads a, b, Fig. 1. The lid or cover B rests on the bead b, and is secured by a spring band or open hoop C, which is sprung into the recess formed by the bead a. In the form shown in Fig. 3, the bead a is omitted, and the vessel is formed with inwardly-projecting tongues c to retain the securing-band C. The edge of the cover is recessed to enable it to be inserted past the tongues, and, when in position, is partially rotated to lock it under the tongues. In the modification shown in Fig. 5, the vessel is formed with a turned-in flange or lip D, and the cover is secured by a flat band C<1>. In some cases, the band may be made of cardboard or strong paper. When the drum is required as an airtight receptacle, the hoop or band may be soldered to the cover after it is in position, in which case the handle on the cover may be dispensed with.
