Abstract
Abstract 158,149. Barnard, H. O. Dec. 31, 1919. Appliances for illuminating cavities; light a n d other radiations, treating diseases with.- Relates to instruments such as laryngoscopes, and cystoscopes, for examining or treating cavities of the body of the kind in which rays of light from an electric lamp arranged on or near the outer end of the instrument are passed through the material of the walls of a glass tube or along a glass rod, and consists in the employment of quartz in place of glass. Fig. 2 shows a construction in which an electric bulb a is held by a support a<1> on the outer end of a quartz rod b secured to the wall of a speculum e. The rod is preferably coated with platinum or silver, and more than one such rod may be employed. The ends of the rod or rods b may be plane or curved so as to give parallel, converging, or diverging pencils of light. Fig. 5 shows another form in which a tungsten filament g is incorporated in the material of the outer end of a quartz tube d<2> which is preferably platinized or silvered on both .inner and outer surfaces. In any form of the instrument the source of light may be an electric bulb of arch or crown shape, or a tube of quartz f, Fig. S, containing a platinum or other filament f<1> raised to incandescence, and the bulb or tube may be secured to the outer end of the speculum tube or be held thereon by an annular cap or cover f<2>. For treatment of the interior of a cavity by ultraviolet rays a mercury vapour lamp may be emplcyed.
