Photopolymerisable composition
Abstract
Abstract 1408265 Photopolymerizable compositions IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 26 Sept 1972 [18 Oct 1971 2 March 1972] 48365/71 and 9807/72 Heading C3P A photopolymerizable composition comprises at least one polymerizable ethylenieally unsaturated material and a photosensitive catalyst comprising (a) at least one photosensitizer having the structure where X is >C=O, >CR 1 R 2 or >CR 3 OR 4 , R 1 to R 4 , which may be the same or different, are hydrogen or hydrocarbyl groups, n is 0 or 1, and the groups A, which may be the same or different, are hydrocarbyl or substituted hydrocarbyl groups and in which the groups A may be further linked together by a direct link or by a divalent hydrocarbyl group, or in which the groups A together may form a fused aromatic ring system, the groups A being aromatic (including heterocyclic) or substituted aromatic when n is 1 and X is >CR 1 R 2 and when n is 0, and (b) at least one reducing agent capable of reducing the photosensitizer when the photosensitizer is in an excited state and having the structure where M is an element of Group Vb of the Periodic Table of the Elements and the units R, which may be the same or different, are hydrogen atoms, hydrocarbyl groups, substituted hydrocarbyl groups or groups in which two units R together with the element M form a cyclic ring system, no more than two of the units R being hydrogen atoms or substituted hydrocarbyl groups and, where the element M is attached directly to an aromatic group R, at least one of the other units R has a group attached to M. In the examples compositions comprising styrene, unsaturated polyesters prepared from propylene glycol, fumaric acid, isophthalic acid, maleic anhydride and a glycidyl ester, a compound having the structure BHNCONHB, where B is N-vinyl pyrollidone, glycol dimethacrylate, divinylbenzene, methyl methacrylate, a vinylended reaction product of hydroxyethyl methacrylate and an isocyanate ended adduct of 4 : 4<SP>1</SP>-diphenylmethane diisocyanate and oxypropylated bisphenol A, acrylonitrile, and hydroxyethyl methacrylate; benzil, fluorenone, phenanthraquinone, benzophenone, α-naphthil, #-naphthil, p-tolil, acenaphthenequinone, #- naphthoin, α - naphthoin, benzoin, 4 : 4<SP>1</SP> - dichlorobenzil, anisil, anisoin, furil, biacetyl, camphorquinone, p-nitrobenzil and rose bengal, dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate, n - butylamine, di - n - butylamine, triethylamine, trin-butyl-phosphine, allylthiourea, S-benzyl isothiuronium p-toluene sulphinate, o-tolyl thiourea, sodium diethyl dithiophosphate, N,N- dimethyl aniline and N-methyl diphenylamine; paraffin wax in toluene, rutile titanium dioxide, silica and a blue pigment are charged in glass bottles or cast on metal plates and exposed to blue fluorescent tubes, a medium pressure mercury lamp, high-pressure mercury lamps, blacklight blue tubes and daylight. The ultra-violet radiation may be filtered out of the radiation emitted by the blue fluorescent tubes.
