Process for producing rubber-modified plastics material
Abstract
Abstract 1389491 Graft polymerization process SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO Ltd 12 April 1972 [14 April 1971] 16935/72 Heading C3G A graft polymerization process comprises (i) bulk polymerizing a solution of a natural or synthetic rubber in a mixture of methyl methacrylate and styrene in the presence of an azobis compound or an organic peroxide as polymerization initiator until from 3À5% to 15% by weight of the monomers have been converted to polymeric material, (ii) adding a chain transfer agent to the resulting partially polymerized reaction mixture and continuing bulk polymerization until from 20% to 40% of the monomers have been converted, the reaction mixture being kept uniform by stirring throughout the reaction and the addition of the chain transfer agent ensuring that the rubber remains in the form of particles having a size of not more than 1 micron, and (iii) suspension polymerizing the so-produced prepolymer in the presence of lauroyl peroxide as initiator. Examples are given in which acrylonitrile is optionally included in the monomer mixture, the rubber is butadiene-styrene copolymer, the chain transfer agent is t-dodecyl mercaptan and the initiator in both the bulk and suspension polymerizations is lauroyl peroxide.
