Abstract

Abstract 1298223 Paper M CHYAPIL 27 Nov 1969 [27 Nov 1968] 58167/69 Heading D2B An absorbent collagen network is made by forming a suspension of comminuted untanned collagen tissue, homogenizing the slurry, including a non-collagenous cross-linking agent, adjusting the pH to less than 5.5 unless it is already below 5.5, freezing the slurry, holding it frozen for from 12 hours to 30 days, thawing the frozen slurry and squeezing out most of the water, e.g. in the nip of a pair of rolls. The cross-linking agent may be a tanning agent, e.g. glutaraldehyde, or may be a melamine-formaldehyde resin. The extent of the cross-linking can be controlled by varying the temperature and duration of the freezing to obtain a felt-like or spongy product. A plasticizer, e.g. glycerin or sorbitol may be included in the slurry. A textile reinforcement may be inserted in the slurry before freezing, or the porosity may be increased by beating in air or an inert gas, or by including a gas-generating substance such as sodium bicarbonate. The product may subsequently be sterilized for surgical use, or an antibiotic, analgesic, disinfectant or material that inhibits or promotes blood clotting may be included. Antibiotics used in an example are bacitracin, neomycin and tetracyclin. Sterilization may be by radiation from a cobalt-60 source or by means of ethylene oxide gas.
