Abstract
Abstract 1296872 Circlips; mounting wheels on shafts I G MEIKLEJOHN & CO Ltd 19 April 1971 [25 March 1970] 14410/70 Headings F2H and F2U [Also in Division E2] A circlip fastener 4, manufactured from a resilient material, preferably a plastic such as nylon or polypropylene, is formed as an annulus provided with at least one inwardly directed projection 4c and a gap 4a, the end portions 4b adjacent the gap being directed outwardly and being contoured together in the profile of a finger-tip such that the ends 4b can be sprung apart by a user with one finger by downward pressure. A single projection 4c is preferably provided, as in Fig. 1, opposite the gap but, as in Fig. 4 (not shown), two projections may be disposed opposite one another, each angularly displaced from the gap by 90 degrees. In use the inner diameter of the annulus abuts an outer member, e.g. a wheel hub (3) or socket (7), and the projection(s) 4c passes through a slot (3a), (7a) in the outer member to engage in a circumferential groove (la), (5a) in an inner member, e.g. an axle (1) or spigot (5), such that the two members cannot move relatively axially but are free to rotate relative to each other. When the ends of the annulus are sprung apart the projection(s) disengages from the groove (1a), (5a) in the inner member, but preferably not from the slot (3a), (7a), allowing the two members to be separated.
