Gate valve comprises a valve member consisting of a cylindrical sleeve 1 which is internally threaded for co-operation with a screwed operating stem and has bosses 4 to guide the member in a valve body C. The sleeve is surrounded by a resilient sealing member 6 e.g. of rubber or plastics material, of which the bore is tapered at both ends to receive tapered bushings 5, 9. The lower bushing is retained by a spring ring 11 engaged in a groove in the sleeve. On closure the lower bushing first engages an abutment 13 on the body and the member 6 is deformed to seal the flow passage on opposite sides. In fully retracted position the valve member engages a seal 16 so enabling a gland packing to be renewed.
