Abstract
Abstract 1,227,359. Shock absorbers. INTEGRATED DYNAMICS Inc. 1 April, 1968, No. 15479/68. Heading F2S. A stack of circular discs 7 of resilient material such as rubber or plastics is located in a housing 8 and capped by a plunger 4 to constitute a shock-absorber. Each disc is required to have a peripheral cavity 12 of parabolic form and the discs are required to be in direct contact with each other. Thus, in the unloaded state of the shock-absorber the only contacts between the housing and the discs are circumferentially extending line contacts. Preferably the size of each cavity is such that, at the maximum compressive loading within the elastic limit, the spread of elastic material into the cavity is less than the volume of the cavity in the unstressed state: i.e. the peripheral wall of each disc never becomes convex. The discs may be of different materials and the sizes of the cavities in successive discs may be different as shown. The plunger, the discs and the housing wall may have respective apertures 20, 21, 22 to allow for air to flow in and out as the plunger reciprocates. In the construction shown the shock absorber is effective in compressive loading only, but by bonding the discs to each other and to the housing base 3 and the plunger head 5 it could be made effective in tension also. In Fig. 3 (not shown), means are provided for adjustably precompressing the stack of discs.
