[Also in Divisions F4 and H1] Chlorofluoroethanes of the formula CS 3-n - Cl n .CClF 2 , wherein n is 0 or an integer of 1 to 3, are obtained by photochlorinating CH 3 CHF 2 , which may contain a minor amount of HF, with chlorine, using as light source a lamp having a glass bulb or tube which is coated with a fluorine-containing resin, or is enclosed within a glass enclosure coated with such a resin, or is surrounded by a tube of such a resin. The resin is preferably a polymer of vinyl fluoride, vinylidene fluoride, tetrafluoroethylene, chlorofluorovinylidene, monochlorotrifluoroethylene or hexafluoropropylene. The lamp may be a fluorescent, mercury incandescent or other metallic lamp.
