Abstract

Abstract 1,100,186. Electro-physical measurement. CORNING GLASS WORKS. Aug. 9, 1965 [Aug. 17, 1964], No.34043/65. Heading G1N. An electrode of the ion exchange type, particularly for the measurement of the concentration of calcium ions in aqueous solution, consists of a silver-silver chloride electrode in contact with an organic ion exchange liquid, which is in turn in contact with the test solution but is chosen to be substantially immiscible with the solution. The organic liquid may be a compound which is normally liquid (e.g. certain organo-phosphoric acids, certain carboxylic acids and perfluorocarboxylic acids, and certain primary, secondary and tertiary amines) or may be normally solid (e.g. solid amines, quarternary ammonium salts, pyridinium salts, alkyl and aryl phosphates, phosphites and sulphonates) dissolved in such solvents as octyl and elodecyl alcohols, certain ketones, trialkyl phosphorates and mineral oils. The liquid may be separated from the test solution by a porous membrane (Fig. 1), or the test solution may float on the surface of the liquid (Fig. 2), or the liquid may be formed into a stiff paste or gel by mixing with colloidal silica, or diatomaceous earth (Figs. 3 and 4). Examples of specific organic liquids are given.
