Phonetic tube for insertion following laryngectomy - pref. has a moulded plastic body fitted with a silver flap valve
Abstract
Abstract A phonetic tube for linking the pharynx and the trachea following a total laryngectomy includes a flap valve normally held closed by a spring, to prevent phlegm etc. from entering the artificial windpipe. Opt. the tube is made in one piece, or as two coaxial and telescopic pieces from a physiologically inert plastics material, e.g. acrylic, polyolefin, PTFE. The tube may have a round, elliptical or oval section between 4 and 15 mm across. The flap valve is pref. of Ag at least 95% pure, held by a stainless steel spring mounted so as not to be in direct contact with the patient. For the telescopic construction, the outer sleeve may feature integral internal studs aligned with a groove on the internal sleeve. Quotes "Aaltaglas M 20" (RTM-Soc. Altulor) as a suitable acrylic moulding material.
