Instrument for pneumatic removal of live tissue e.g. tumour - has hollow handle and shaft with articulated tip directing pressurised fluid at tissue
Abstract
Abstract The surgical instrument has a stem whose axis is fixed longitudinally w.r.t. the handle. The tip (76) of the instrument is mounted on the stem by a cylindrical element (100) which has radial slots (110) spaced angularly around its internal face. The connector permits axial movement of the tip relative to the stem when it is subjected to fluid pressure. The tip itself is essentially cylindrical with a radial flange (94). The tip has a central passageway opening at its distal end through which high pressure oxygen or air exits to sever the tissue. The flow of the pressurised fluid is controlled by a valve arrangement in the handle.
