Abstract

Abstract The surgical prosthesis fits between the vertebrae and contacts the cartilaginous surfaces. It comprises a flat semi-circular disc (4, 5) approx. 7 mm. thick, made from a non-deformable and incompressible synthetic resin. The diametral face of the disc is extended forwards (7, 8) at each end, forming a flat bottomed recess (6) which locates in the Dural recess. On each top and bottom side of the disc is a semi-spherical boss (1), these being made from a slightly deformable, but incompressible, synthetic resin. Each boss is located centrally on its relevant surface and acts as a support and as a ball joint.
