Catheter for repeated dialysis - has flexible sealing material at bend where blood vessel puncturing probe is inserted
Abstract
Abstract The catheter, which can be also used in blood transfusions, comprises a straight tip (1) which is hollow and of semi-rigid, non-toxic, non-irritant material, through which liquid is injected into or tapped-off from the blood vessel etc. connected to this is a flexible tube (2) with two or more sections offset from each other and joined by a bend from the outside of which there extends a mass of elastic material (3) in line with the tip. A probe to puncture the blood vessel, whose needle length is greater than that of the tip plus the mass of material, is inserted via the latter along the centre line (X-X') of the tip. The elasticity of the material shuts the latter automatically and hermetically after the probe is withdrawn.
