Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 14
Claim 1
Independent Claim
51 words
A spinal implant (10;61;70;81;200;300) comprising a generally rectangular member, characterized in that said member has a dimension of less than the width of a disc space between two adjacent vertebrae (V), whereby a plurality of said implants (10;61;70;81;200;300) of different widths have a width of the size of the disc space.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
27 words
A plurality of spinal implants according to claim 1, characterized in that the combined width of said spinal implants (10;61;70;81;200;300) approximates the width of the disc space.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
22 words
The spinal implant of claim 1, characterized in that said implants (10;61;70;81;200;300) are inserted into the disc space one at a time.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
32 words
The spinal implant of claim 1, characterized in that said member has a plurality of openings (20,36;63;100;324) therein for promoting bone ingrowth with the implant (10;61;70,81;200;300) and fusion of said vertebrae (V).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
33 words
The spinal implant of claim 1, characterized in that said member has a height substantially equal to the height of the space created by the removed disc from between two adjacent vertebrae (V).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
29 words
The spinal implant of claim 1, characterized in that said member is made of a bone ingrowth material for promoting bone ingrowth between the member and said vertebrae (V).
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
43 words
The spinal implant of claim 1, characterized in that said rectangular member (61) has a plurality of ratchet like members (62) facing in the same direction on the upper and lower surface of said member (61) for engagement with the adjacent vertebrae (V).
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
36 words
The spinal implant of claim 7, characterized in that said ratched like members (62) on the upper and lower faces face in different directions to prevent movement of the adjacent vertebrae (V) relative to each other.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
23 words
The spinal implant of claim 1, characterized in that said implant (70) has opposed ridges (72,74) for maintaining alignment of the vertebrae (V).
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
54 words
The spinal implant of claim 1, characterized in that the rectangular member (81) is separable into an upper portion (84) and a lower portion (82), and comprises a wedge means (86,88) fitted between said upper portion (84) and said lower portion (82) for forcing said upper portion (84) away from said lower portion (82).
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
56 words
The spinal implant of claim 10, characterized in that said wedge means (86, 88) comprises a central threaded opening (90,92) with a threaded screw (94) connecting two of said wedges (86,88) whereby turning said threaded screw (94) draws said wedges (86,88) together and forces said upper portion (84) and lower portion (81) away from each other.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim
19 words
The spinal implant of claim 11, characterized in that said implant (81) has a plurality of holes (100) therethrough.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim
24 words
The spinal implant of claim 11, characterized in that said upper and lower surface of said implant has projections (106) for engaging the vertebrae.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim
54 words
The spinal implant of claim 1, characterized in that said implant (300) has a plurality of slots (306) in the upper and lower surfaces (302,304) and a plurality of pivotal members (307) movable between a first position within said implant (300) and a second position outside of said implant (300) through said slots (306).
