Abstract

Wires (3, 4) made of nitinol are arranged in a stent (1) with a flexible support structure (2), each of which has a different shape memory function. The wire (3) changes from the martensitic to the austenitic state at a temperature of 35 ° C. With the wires (4) this only happens at a temperature of 40 ° C. At room temperature, the stent is small, plastic, and inelastic. After placement in the body, it unfolds through the restoring force of the wires (3). By applying heat, the wires (4) also change to the austenitic state. This doubles the restoring force of the entire stent. The restoring force only drops again when cold is applied below the hysteresis point.
